Why Stuff The Bus?

The Mix started Stuff The Bus twelve years ago because despite the fact that we live in the land of plenty, tens of thousands of our neighbors go hungry every day. These aren't people who just lay around looking for a handout and expecting others to take care of them.

Over a third go to work every day just like you and me. Over 60% have a high school or better education. And, sadly, over a third, 37% to be exact, are children aged 17 and under.

Of the people served by Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin:
  • 37% had to choose between paying their rent or mortgage and buying food.
  • 43% had to choose between paying their utilities or heating bills and buying food.
  • 28% had to choose between paying for medicine or medical care and buying food.
And when it comes to food;
  • 50% ate less than they should because did not have enough money to buy food,
  • 42% were hungry but didn't eat because they couldn't afford food,
    and the most devastating of all;
  • 28% didn't eat for whole day because they did not have enough money for food.
If you've ever been sick and cold, you know how miserable that can be. Now, add hungry, really hungry, to that feeling and you start to get an idea of just how devastating this problem can be, especially here in Wisconsin when the temperature drops.

So, every year since 1998 we've been out on the day before Thanksgiving broadcasting live and asking our listeners to do what they can help to us help Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin in the fight against hunger. Our partners; Pick 'n Save and the Milwaukee County Transit System have joined the fight with us. We hope you can join us too.
